WEEKEND POST: POETRY : MY OWN POEM:
Free Verse Poem:
Redundant Cycles
by Amina B.
I sit and look out-
At all of cruelties of the world
The shattered innocence of the young girls
Who are selling themselves out on the street
The hidden guilt of young males
Selling drugs at the tender age of 15
Little kids imitate what happen around them
A redundant cycle that goes on and on, never stopping
I sit and look out-
At all the pain, the drunk father who abuses his whole family
His son grows up, a replica of the one he once feared so
Merciless souls who kill and rape
Unforgiving hearts, who plot to take revenge
Stuck in the ghetto, in a sweater
In the hood
I sit and look out at all these pains,
But I turn my head the other way.

WEEKEND POST: CUSTOMS: PROM: DRESSES
Prom is an exciting event that teenagers attend in 8th grade ( junior high) or in their senior year( high school). To get ready for it, there's a lot of preparation and excitement.
This slide show below shows Prom dresses, from short and flirty to long and graceful that I think are girls' best friend( after diamonds)

WEEKEND POST: POETRY: DREAMS BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
DREAMS
I think what this poems is saying is that life wont go anywhere without dreams, it'll be like " a broken-winged bird that cannot fly", in other words, it'll be useless.
The poem also emphasize this, when it says that "when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow", it's wont produce anything. This poem is really inspiring to me, because it shows the consequences of a life without dreams.

WEEKEND POST: FOLKLORES: BLOODY MARY, BLOOD MARY, BLOODY MARY
The Story
According to a legend, saying Bloody Mary in front of a mirror in a darkened room, ( bathrooms being the most used place), three to 100 times will make her spirit come out of the mirror. Some say she gouges your eyes out, others say she makes you become crazy while some others say she simply pulls you into the mirror, and you're never to be see again.

WEEKEND POST: POETRY: STILL I RISE BY MAYA ANGELOU
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells

My Comment:
I think what this poem is trying to say is that no matter what lies are told about black people, they'll still rise. It's also sort of saying that black people are beautiful, when the poem says " does it come as a surprise, that I dance like I've got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?". It's most importantly telling black people to be proud of who they are, because they are "the hope of the slave."

INVENTOR GEORGE CRUM
Potato chips are a big part of our lives, from brands such as Lays to Wise, potato chips are indeed a delightful snack. Yet, have you ever wondered who first invented them?
George Crum(1822 – 1914)was an African/Native-American inventor who by mistake invented potato chips. He was the head chef of Moon's Lake House, a resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. When he made fries, a customer said it was "too thick and soggy", and also "not salty enough". Frustrated by the customer's comment, he decided to push it and sliced the potatoes way too thinly. The new version received accolades, and pretty soon, everyone were asking for it. His chips became popular and were known as Saratoga Chips . He opened a new restaurant with the income he earned from his invention and placed potato chips on every table. Pretty soon, many other people started selling them too.

WEEKEND POST:EARTHQUAKE IN CHILE

Chile's earthquake was less devastating than Haiti's because Chile is simply wealthier.

WOMEN ISSUES
Even though women have tried gain the same rights as men, today you can still see some discrimination. Some jobs don't hire you because you're a woman, and some people still think women are weak.
Colored women, or immigrant women suffer the most discrimination, a lot of people think Black or Immigrant women are not trustworthy, and that's just one example of what we, as women, have to go through.
It's not only sex discrimination, it is often concerned with race.
For example, a white woman may get help from the government quicker than a Black woman would.
They say race doesn't matter, but people who say that cant see the fact that discrimination, whether against women or minorities, will always be part of our society, i guess It's just the way people are raised.

SOME iNFO ABOUT CLiNTON HiLL & BROWSViLLE
Back in the days, ( possibly Still), Clinton Hill used to be a very properous neighborhood who had rich people living in it. They would travel to Manhattan by stagecoach. These rich people have built many mansion, some still here today.
Brownsville's main thoroughfare is Pitkin Avenue, On which you can find a clutter of stores, and of course shoppers !
Coming from Brownsville, Clinton-Washington Avenue is the first place you start seeing people other than African-Americans Or Hispanics.
Clinton Hill is a form of a melting pot.
To me, its like a collaboration between two very different races trying to live together
Pitkin Avenue is a place I frequent a lot, whether I'm shopping or going to my doctors.
Brownsville motto is "Never Ran, Never Will", and it is one of the most populated neighborhoods. It used to be a Jewish neighborhood, but is today mostly populated by African Americans.
